چکیده

Background and aims Optimal nutritional therapy, including the individually adapted provision of energy, is associated with better clinical outcomes. Indirect calorimetry best tool to measure monitor energy expenditure hence optimize prescription. Similarly other medical techniques, indications contra-indications must be acknowledged optimise use indirect in routine. Measurements should repeated enable adaptation evolution, as may change substantially. This review at providing clinicians knowledge routinely interpret results. Method We performed a bibliographic research publications referenced PubMed using following terms: “indirect calorimetry”, “energy expenditure”, “resting “VCO2”, “VO2“, “nutritional therapy”. included mainly studies published last ten years, related principles, innovations, patient's benefits, practice medico-economic aspects. Results have gathered required for routine interpretation A few cases illustrate decision-making process around its application prescription, individual optimisation therapy. also describe latest technical innovations results tailoring nutrition therapy according measured benefits. Conclusion The encouraged strategy care.

Indirect calorimetry in critical care.

In critical care, particular attention is paid to disorders which lead to cerebral dysfunction. Hypoxia is the most common example and considerable effort is devoted to avoiding this problem. If the brain is deprived of fuel, as in hypoglycaemia, the outcome is similar yet far less attention is paid to maintaining an adequate and appropriate long-term fuel supply. Indirect calorimetry has been ...

What does indirect calorimetry really tell us?

Accurate and sensitive assessments of energy expenditure (EE) in mice changes in the balance of gut microbial species could differentially are essential given their importance to research on the molecular mechanisms of energy homeostasis [1]. EE phenotyping in mice is widely available using state-of-the-art equipment in many laboratories, including those in regional centers in the United States...

Challenges of indirect calorimetry in mice.

TO THE EDITOR: the recent paper by Longo et al. (5) provides an excellent description of the challenges of performing indirect calorimetry in mice. Mice that gain weight or are weight stable in their home cages often lose weight during the indirect calorimetry measurements, indicating that the procedure alters the usual behavior of the animals. To tackle this difficulty, the authors proposed a ...

Energy expenditure in critically ill patients estimated by population-based equations, indirect calorimetry and CO2-based indirect calorimetry

BACKGROUND Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the reference method for measurement of energy expenditure (EE) in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients. When IC is unavailable, EE can be calculated by predictive equations or by VCO2-based calorimetry. This study compares the bias, quality and accuracy of these methods. METHODS EE was determined by IC over a 30-min period in patients from a...

Daily energy expenditure and its main components as measured by whole-body indirect calorimetry in athletic and non-athletic adolescents.

The objectives of the present study were to determine whether differences in usual physical activity affect BMR, sleeping energy expenditure (EE), and EE during seated activities between athletic and non-athletic adolescents, and to establish individual relationships between heart rate and EE. Adolescents (n 49, four groups of eleven to fifteen boys or girls aged 16-19 years) participated in th...
